Themes & Trends

The 'Research & Trends, Winter 2001' report, compiled by Philips Lighting, showed that people are becoming increasingly interested in decorating their home in their own personal style. It is important that every room has its own personal ambience. To support the consumer in realising the perfect atmosphere and choosing the right kind of lighting, Philips Lighting has put together a few practical suggestions:

Develop Atmosphere
A single central light source in a room provides flat and boring illumination. Mix light sources and use table lamps or uplighters along with a mixture of bulbs to create a more dynamic and interesting atmosphere. For this light effect, try Philips Halotone halogen bulbs to create a brighter, sharper light, Spotone bulbs for directional light and Softone bulbs for a pastel shade that will complement colour schemes.

Keep the energy moving
Warm colours and Softone bulbs will spread light more evenly and help brighten dim aspects of the room. Light up walls using Softone bulbs and place various spotlights around the room, and the entire space will be washed and united by a single colour. This provides a warm, relaxed and friendly atmosphere to enhance the mood. Also try positioning mirrors to reflect light back into the room.

Light up the entrance to your world
The front entrance is the most important in the house, as it is known as the place where most of the energy comes into the home. The entrance is therefore an obvious symbol with which to welcome your friends. People currently seem to prefer to invite friends to their own home instead of taking them to a restaurant. To make your friends feel welcome, your entrance should have a warm and friendly atmosphere. Ensure that the area is well kept and inviting. Place a few pot plants near the door to conduct healthy energy into the house, and light up the entrance or porch to offer guests a warm welcome. As the light will be on for a significant period of time, use Philips Ecotone Energy Saver bulbs, which last up to ten times longer and consume 80% less energy than ordinary bulbs.

Avoid hard edges and shadows
More and more people want the different rooms in their home to reflect personality, so they seek a harmonious and supportive setting. Avoid harsh shadows by choosing soft shapes and a Softone bulb that matches the local colour scheme.

Create perfect balance across areas
The atmospheres in the various rooms in the house should be in perfect balance. Lighting can prove very useful in brightening up problem areas that require more attention. It can therefore act as the 'bridge' between different areas in the house, as people nowadays tend to create a different atmosphere and identity in each room. For example, those who work or read a lot at home should ensure that the area offers sufficient light to concentrate comfortably. Fit Halotone bulbs to reading or desk lamps to guarantee safe and effective task lighting. On the other hand, if you wish to develop your amorous relations, you could use lights on a dimmer switch to vary the atmosphere in the bedroom. Softone bulbs also create a tranquil and relaxing mood. Try fitting dimmers in the dining room, so that you can adjust the lighting for an intimate meal or more lively dinner party.

Light up parties
Having a party calls for a happy and colourful atmosphere. To create the perfect party scene, use Partytone bulbs, available in four different colours.

Experiment
Good lighting can make or break a room and it needn't be complicated or expensive. Simply change a bulb or two and apply a few lighting techniques to brighten areas, soften colours, develop atmosphere and create positive vibes.
