Trends and Effects of Halogen Lighting in Hotels
The key to attracting new clients and perhaps regular clients as well, into a hotel lies in developing an interesting and welcoming atmosphere. Lighting can play a vital role in achieving this. Imagine for a moment, welcoming guests through the door into an interior where the lighting - as a result of its effects - gives the client a feeling of homeliness and cordiality.

Artificial lighting can also serve a number of special requirements in restaurants and cafes. Take for instance, a business which has to cater for customers at various times of the day: late morning, afternoon, early evening and late evening. Each period demands its own atmosphere, an individual ambience. To manage this with changes in the decor is simply not feasible. Using artificial lighting is a safe and affordable solution.

Hotel entrance
What is needed is a clear indication of where the entrance is and of course, a genuine welcome for the guests. This can be achieved by creating a suitable visual scene and emphasizing the feeling of well-being. Numerous avenues exist for the imaginative designer. Downlight luminaires, housing narrow-beam, low wattage, halogen aluminium spot lamps or narrow-beam, low-voltage, halogen capsules together with an external reflector will paint patches of light across the floor and give a sparkling effect on the ceiling. Should a smoother, more uniform effect be desired at the entrance, a choice can be made between wide-beam, low-voltage and halogen aluminium spot lamps mounted in downlights.

Reception and lobby
It is obvious that the reception and lobby have to set the tone for welcoming the guests into the hotel. Various visual tasks, however, have to be performed in this area so the lighting has an important part to play. These tasks can include guest check-in and check-out, reading VDU screens, writing and orientation.

Any lighting solution will vary according to the layout and function, but it should be remembered that this will be instrumental in creating the desired visual environment. Lighting could be aimed directly onto counters, using Halogen or low-voltage capsules or low-voltage, aluminium spot lamps. These same halogen lamps can also be put to use for highlighting walls, plants, paintings and the like, while at the same time emphasizing all the architectural features.

Conference rooms
It is easy to forget the varied and demanding requirements that the lighting of a conference room has to satisfy. Activities such as discussion, lectures, overhead projection, slide and video presentation, plus reading and writing, must all be catered for. Flexibility, safety and ambience are the key needs here. How can such diverse needs be satisfied? The answer is with halogen lighting systems.

Correct modeling effects, both on people and on furnishings, can be obtained using medium to wide-beam, low voltage, halogen capsules with an external reflector, low-voltage, halogen aluminium spot lamps or halogen lamps mounted in downlight luminaires. At the same time, this will give adequate, uniform lighting on task surfaces. For greater comfort, however, the walls should be highlighted. This can be very effectively done with wall-washing techniques using double-envelope or double-ended halogen lamps in appropriate luminaires. Another solution is to radiate more regular patterns on the walls by means of downlights - adjustable, if need be, equipped with medium to wide-beam, low voltage halogen spot lamps.

All the solutions suggested here are dimmable, so a change in lighting level will be matched by a change to a cozier or more stimulating atmosphere, as desired.
