PHILIPS ILLUMINATES PEOPLE POWER MONUMENT USING STATE-OF-THE-ART LED TECHNOLOGY
Manila - A famous landmark paying tribute to the bravery displayed by Filipinos during the first EDSA revolution received a spectacular new nighttime look when it was outfitted with state-of-the-art light emitting diode (LED) technology courtesy of leading lighting company Philips.
The People Power Monument, which is located at the corner of Temple Hill Drive and EDSA in Quezon City, is the latest world landmark illuminated using Philips’ new LED fixtures, which include the ClearLine, ColorBlast, eW Cove Powercore and Projector LED lamps. The iconic monument was lit up last February 24 on the eve of the anniversary of the People Power Revolution (EDSA 1).
Each element in the system served a specific purpose in the monument’s lighting plan and can be remotely controlled, taking full advantage of the design flexibility offered by the new system.
ColorBlast units were positioned facing the human figures in the sculpture to provide fully-customizable changing wall-washing effects and shifting saturated colors.
Meanwhile, a compact Projector LED unit, designed to work well with sculptures, arches and gardens, was trained on Ninoy Aquino’s figure, providing powerful spotlight effects without risk of overheating.
Tight spaces and accent areas in the monument was reinforced with eW Cove Powercore fixtures, which deliver continuous streams of white light for curves and other shaped effects without the need of an external power supply.
Finally, large ClearLine street lamps were positioned around the perimeter of the sculpture to provide overhead lighting.
The new range of solid-state LED lighting offers an unprecedented level of flexibility in terms of color, control, dynamics, and architectural integration, which helped build the identity of the structure and made it resonate more powerfully with onlookers. Vivid saturated colors, fully-directed light, unobtrusive and vibration-proof solid-state fixtures, and minimal light pollution became the hallmarks of the new lighting system.
The LED lighting technology that was used is also extremely efficient and requires 80% less energy than a similar scheme using conventional incandescent and halogen lamps.
Additional benefits of LED lighting include the ability to control color effects, a lifetime of up to 50,000 hours at 70 percent of lumen maintenance, and low maintenance costs.
The sculpture is the first landmark structure in the country to be illuminated with the new LED fixtures.
With the project, Philips elevated the status of the People Power Monument and brought it alongside other global landmarks similarly illuminated using the company’s LED systems, such as New Zealand’s Sky Tower, England’s Buckingham Palace, the Singapore Flyer, China’s Science and Technology Building, and the Cairo Tower in Egypt.
“As the industry leader in lighting, we always look to innovate on what we’ve done in the past. Through the use of our latest LED systems in lighting up the People Power Monument, we hope to help build the identity of this very important structure and bring help bring the story of EDSA to an even greater audience,” said Philips Electronics and Lighting, Inc. CEO Rico Gonzales.
